ME-VID Evaluation

Me-Vid Evaluation

Pre-Production Skills
My pre-production skills were when i was planning out my script where i had to make a minimum of 80 shots that i would record or put images onto those shots, we used Microsoft Excel as we could use a sort of spreadsheet where we fill in what we will do on that shot number, scripting is very important as it tells us what we need to do and what order we need to do it in and following this would help us allot as we know what we have to do.

I also had to think of different things to do throughout my assignment such as finding locations and what angles i had to use, this opened a wide variety of options that i could use as i didn't have to stick with strict angle shots, i could use whatever angles and locations i wanted but there was one rule i was not allowed to break and that rule was the rule of thirds.

Production Skills
During the production of my Me-Vid i got use to handling the camera and using it in places where i wouldn't really use it and it also got me to plan thoroughly and use different locations to make it more unique and not as boring instead of me sitting in one place talking about myself, it got me to experiment with the camera and widen the way i can record.

Another production skill was using the green screen allowing me to use any background i wanted to, i used Stamford Bridge as my background as i support Chelsea but i also used it because i was talking about Chelsea and it would only make sense to use something relevant for my background, also it is a location that i find very interesting as i am into football and watch mostly every game of Chelsea that i can.

Post Production Skills
A skill i use in post production was making my graphics, i done this by using Live type to make writing appear on my screen such as my introduction, i used graphics into my project to make it look more interesting and i also gave my text a animated background to make it look even more better as it looks more advanced instead of having bad text and a plain background.

I used Final Cut Express to edit my project such as editing each clip that i recorded, when using final cut express it allows me to trim the parts that i don't need into my Me-Vid so it allows me to trim and make it run more smooth so you don't hear "1 2 3 action" so it goes straight to me talking about what i need to, this program allowed me to do all sorts with my clips and improve them, i could cut, trim and allow some sort of effects into my Me-Vid.

How Will The Skills Learnt During ME-VID Help You In Your Music Video Production?
It has helped me as i will now know what i have to do in scripting when i have to plan out 200+ shots for my music video as i have done it in my Me-Vid, it will also help me when i need to edit my clips as i have used final cut express and Live type before so i will know how to use all these programs in the future.

Overall doing my Me-Vid was like doing work experience because i am getting a taster of what i will be doing in my music video, so now i know what software's i will have to use and how to function them properly without getting confused, i now know how to edit and make graphics (Text) appear on my screen when i need it to this allows more thing to open up in my video.

Camera and editing Techniques

During our film i was using the 180 degree rule, this is where i am not allowed to cross an imaginary line going through a circle so there i would be on one side of the action the whole time and i used this when recording when we were doing our shot reverse shot.

Shot reverse shot, i used this shot when our dialogue came in, when doing Connors dialogue we kept the camera still and made him say all his lines and we did the same for Zahir and at the end when we came to editing it worked perfectly as it made like the camera was there the whole time and never moved but you just couldn't see it but it was us really just getting all the dialogue done before moving the camera.

We used a track from when Connor is walking across the walkway to the door and how we did this was just by simply following the action (Connor) walking to the door and this was simply all we had to do for that shot, but you are not allowed to move the camera up or down or diagonally it was just a simply left to right but tracking Connor.

When editing we used cuts about 95% of the time, cuts are really important as they can do many things from seeing some ones point of view or changing the scene entirely in our work we used both, when Connor spoke we change to Connors face and the same for Zahir but when we had to go into a different room we used cuts to get rid of the boring stuff and make the film look as realistic as possible.

We used rule of thirds in every scene as this is the one rule that can never ever be broken as it keeps all the focus on the person you are recording so at no point in our film we didn't use this, the rule of thirds is where you keep the person you are recording eyes a third of the way down the screen.

We also used match on action in our film when Connor was opening the door, we did this by recording one side of the door being opened all the way and than done the same on the other side and we just simply cut out the bit from where we wanted the door to be opened from in the previous shots and than we put both shots together to make the door look like it was being opened all in one making a smooth transition.

The Evaluation

I used the 180 degree rule when i was recording Connor and Zahir, I imagined there was a circle but with a line directly through it, this made me stick to one side of the circle, using this stops the audience from getting confused

I always used the rule of thirds because this rule should never be broken, how I maintained this was easy, all i did was keep the person i was recording their eyes a third of the way down doing this allows all the focus on the person you are trying to record.

I used match on action when Connor was opening the door, we did this by recording him opening the door fully on one side then recording him doing it again but on the other side of the door, when showing it from different sides of the door and making the door open smoothly in both scenes this allows the scene to look like it has two cameras but there isn't actually two its just how smoothly the scene runs

The challenges I had when filming was when we began to film the tripod we had got given would not stand up straight so we had to record our film in a certain way but  we had overcome that as it wasn't actually that bad where we couldn't record, but in the future we will get tripod that will stand up straight so we can record perfect.

Our main challenge during post production was because of personal reasons, my team didn't come in with their storyboards so in order to move on we had to redo our whole storyboards when we could have been recording, so when we done all our storyboards we really had one day to record our film so we felt rushed but in the future we will give the storyboards to someone who is more responsible and will come in no matter what.

My overall strength when recording was i had a good strength of planning what we would have to be doing during our film and i was able to tell my crew what they had to do when recording to make our film look much more better, also when recording i had good camera work of using all the shots that we needed too, i am also someone who likes to continue doing things until they are perfect and as an outcome of that our film looked really good.

Overall weaknesses was when we began to get into the dialogue of our film my crew would speak fast and hesitate, from this I believe they are camera shy so when filming you could see this in the end product where they couldn't act normal and they began to make their body all stiff and this really made the film not look as good as it should have done.

For improvements if i had the same crew i would try to make them feel as natural as possible so our film looks as realistic as possible as no one wants to see people looking forced to do something they can't do, also i will continue to take the job as the responsible one as I haven't missed one day of school yet where as my crew have missed a few lessons each.

Jack Mann StoryBoard

Over the past week we have been story-boarding our plan where we have to record someone opening a door, walking across the room and talking to someone, what we did was we made a plan before of what we are going to say and what we are going to do and we put it all together on the storyboard, the storyboard is very important and we must strictly stay with it and what it says we must do as if we don't we will get confused and we wont know what we are doing and most likely fail so we must strictly stick with what we have done. Our plan was Connor and Zahir are talking about football but in our shots we made sure to take each shot more than twice so that way we can pick the best one out of the 3 so than we wont have to go back and record even more.

Planning For The Encounter

Over the past week we have been looking at different things we need in our small project coming up, we have look at what shots and angles we should use in our project, as i took GCSE Media last year i have a advantage as i have already learned these rules such as the rule of thirds. The rule of thirds is where you keep the person you are recording a 1/3rd of the way down, here is an example in a picture.
We also looked at more types of shots like the typical ones long-shot mid-shot and close up this are exactly what they sound like a long-shot is where you can see the whole of the thing/person you are taking a shot at but doesn't show that much detail but each on of these shots goes into more detail as the mid-shot shows half of the person but you can see them more clearly and more of what they are doing and a close up is showing you as much detail as possible, these shots are really important in movies as they can change the atmosphere of the movie as the close up can show if someone is scared by their face sweating and their facial expression.
We also looked at different angles such as high angle and low angle, the difference between these two are that a high angle shows the person as weaker as we are looking down at them but a low angle shows the person as stronger or more powerful, these shots are typically used in horror movies to show who is the antagonist and protagonist. The high angle could also mean something else such as someone being sad over something they have lost or done and this is the same as the low angle as this can show someone who has won or triumphed someone they have done.

More shots are the shot reverse shot which also goes with the 180 degree rule where you stay on one half of the side the people are facing but the shot reverse shot is where person A is speaking so the camera is over person B left shoulder than when the person speaking swaps the camera goes over persons A right shoulder, this way the camera stays on one side and doesn't cross between the to characters as this would cause confusion for the audience. The shot reverse shot is commonly used when there is talking involved such as an interrogation where the investigator questions the suspect

Match on action is where the scene runs smoothly as it has to match such as if i was opening a door we would record the door opening but when we go on the other side of the door the door must be in the same exact position as it was in the first shot to make the scenes run smoothly because if i open the door fully on the first shot than the second shot it was partly closed it would make no sense, in my opinion this rule is probably harder than the rest to complete but if you take multiple shots of the door opening and edit it, it wont be that much of a problem.

We have also learned not to undershoot and always overshoot as if we undershoot and we don't like parts that we recorded than we have to go out and record them again but if we shoot them a couple times we can see what one we like and whats ones we don't so that way we can pick the best of the bunch and we most likely wont have to waste our time to record again, this way we can concentrate on putting our project together.

Jack Mann My Media Summer

Films/Movies
In my summer holiday i went to watch the new transformers which is called Transformers Age Of Extinction i found it a really great film to watch as it contained allot of action and fighting which i like to see in a movie, this movie had a great story line that i fully understood. I liked the parts where Optimus Prime had to fight the legendary warriors to earn their honor/help to save planet earth but one of them did not like the idea of this and began to attack Prime but Prime overcome the challenge and earned their honor and with that you can see the legendary warriors helping throughout the fight. In the end after they stop earth from being Prime allows the legendary warriors to be free as they helped him on his side to defend earth, in my eyes this shows Prime showing respect to these Legendary Warriors as before he doesn't want to fight them but he wants their help and as they helped him Prime allowed them to be free as a return favour so in a overall summary i thought it was a great film to watch and i would watch it again as it got me really stuck in.

Songs
Dizzie Rascal - Love This Town ft. Teddy Sky is a song i like to listen to and watch because it portrays London in a completely different way than what other people would think of it such as, "Oh London has gangs and all gangs do are bad things" but in this song Dizzie shows that not all gangs are the same and that they can do good in life they aren't all about hate and anger and violence, another reason why i like this song as at the end of the video Dizzie picks up 2 flares and when zoomed out it makes a massive heart around London but to add something to that Dizzie says "it's just one big melting pot, every creed colour and race we got the lot." is showing that no matter what race you are we are all even. The song also has a catchy beat that makes you want to listen to it more and more and the way the music video was made shows a good representation on London has a good loving and helping community where not everyone is the same but there are some people that are good in the world and do want to do things for the better.
TV Programmes
Family Guy - family guy is one of my favorite TV programmers as in my opinion it has some of the funniest things i have heard but some of it can be sort of racist but in a way you know its joking so there is no real reason to be offended such as when Super Death tells Death he is dead he tells Death that he is being reincarnated into a Chinese baby and as soon as Death disappears he reappears as Death again as the Chinese baby was a baby girl and instantly got killed because she was not a boy as in Chinese history boys were the more superior ones over girls and some of the girls would be killed or thrown away as they wanted a boy as they thought the males were more Honorable. But overall family guy is a great TV programme where i couldn't understand if people didn't like it because it has some of the funniest humor but this was my top TV programme of all time, family guy is based on a family Peter, Louis, Meg, Chris, Stewie and their pet dog Brian Griffin who can talk but there is allot of dark humor in family guy which is what i find funny about it.

Websites
YouTube is my all time top website as you can watch anything you like on here to music videos to games to sport to anything you like and i think it will always be my top website as i can even upload my own videos to YouTube, i like to watch people who make me lough when watching the video as i like to have a bit of humor in my day and if i am feeling down or anything i would go on YouTube to watch things that i enjoy. As i have recently been on holiday i have missed some of my favorite football teams games (Chelsea) so with YouTube i am able to watch the highlights of the games i have missed and this is really helpful for me as i can get back on track on what is happening, YouTube is also used worldwide by many people and one of the most successful websites out there, no matter you age or gender YouTube is for everyone and anyone around the world.
News
I do not watch the news allot but when i was on holiday i found this on TV on the news channel where the UK has raised its threat level to 'Severe' this means the UK is a target from a possible attack, this comes from Iraq and Syria as British people have been flying out on their own will to fight but as of the beheading of a american journalist the person who supposedly done the beheading is thought to be a British man as you can hear from the clip of the journalist being beheaded, the man doing it has a strong British accent this could also be another reason for the threat level to be raised to 'Severe' as our own people could be involved on a terrorist attack on their own home ground, but again i do not watch most news but this is the top story that stuck in my head as it has been 3 years since the last threat level was raised as high as this but there is no evidence saying that we could be attacked but it is just a threat level that raises the amount of police and armed forces roaming around the UK, as for us we should just continue our normal lives but keep an eye on the news for further information.
